I was going to call this poem "friendship" but I felt the word "Amistad" and its origin better reflect the emotion I am trying to convey. Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people who know each other. "Amistad" refers to a friend in a similar way but holds a deeper meaning; one that says "you cannot pick you family but you can pick you friends" and sometimes a friend becomes your family. (Rough Copy) Your soul and mine always intended to meet Out nowhere you appeared in my life and with ease You needed someone to care deeply You needed me as much as I needed you It's been years and here we are, thick as thieves Both of us were deserted Our souls aching for someone to care For someone to be real For someone who won't hurt us For someone to fuel our dreams Our bond is not one based on blood Life has taught us what is love Love isn't a physical bond But something deeper and more pure You tell me I am like a bird that always needs to fly No matter where I go my friend If you need me, I will be by your side For you are not just someone I know More than a friend you have become my sister And the bond we have forged is strong Although we are not always together Our hearts are never apart When your life feels like its collapsing Know you are Athena ready to fight back This poem I wrote for you To remind you of your potential This world needs more of your dreams And I need your honesty Do you know just how much you mean to me? Without you, my world would become bleak We are mad hatters Full of dreams and pains You tell me I bring you to life Yet you are the air that fill my lungs As you take this next step in you life More beautiful things are yet to come I know you will be a terrific mother I know you will love and protect your child When you need me call me When the pain threatens to rush forth, I will soothe your spirit as I sing Reminding you of the essence you carry within As you take the hand of the one who loves you Let fears dissipate Don't be afraid to dream Accept this new challenge with calm and easy For you are not alone and you will never be Sofia E.
